Winter Gardening Tasks in Pacific Northwest Zones 7-9
Tips for January
Even though it’s chilly outside your plants still need you. Winter gardening is a great way to prepare for the upcoming growing season and take care of the necessary maintenance to keep your grounds looking pristine.
Lawns: Believe it or not you can lay sod or sprinkle grass seed in January. The seed will be dormant until the weather warms a bit but you can start now to prevent moss from creeping into the bald spots in your lawn.
Trees & Shrubs: Evergreen and Deciduous trees and shrubs can be planted when temperatures are above 40 degrees Fahrenheit and when the soil is not heavily saturated with water. Wrapping them with burlap during periods of freezing temperatures may protect smaller trees and plants. Pruning of trees is also one of the tasks you can take on this month. Get creative and save some of the evergreen boughs for indoor decorating.
Vines & Ground Covers: Thinning of overgrowth and jutting out branches is necessary to tame the overcrowding that can occur when new shoots appear in the Spring. Woody plants can be planted when temperatures are above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bulbs: Spring bulbs can go in the ground now. Just make sure to cover with 3-4 inches of mulch. Mulch can be many kinds of clippings, leaves and even evergreen boughs or hay.
Tools: January is also a good time to make sure your garden tools are sharpened and ready for the Spring. Service your lawn mower, sharpen hoes and shovels, pick axes and gardening shears.
Vegetables: Cabbage, Cauliflower and Broccoli can all be started indoors this month. If you plan on having a greenhouse to extend your growing season, now is the time to purchase or start planning to build your greenhouse.
