What You Want Versus What You Need

It is easy to get caught up in all the frills and decorations of a home because those accessories are what TV, Pinterest, and Google are filled with, those are what make your home a home. These things that should be on your want list are often on your need list. Needs are like the cake while the wants are the frosting. While frosting is great, it goes on after the cake is baked to perfection and if the cake isn’t cooked well, the frosting can hide the bumps and mishaps of the cake itself. That is why coming up with a want v. need list first is so helpful.

It is important to know what kind of house, or cake, you can afford. That is why getting pre-approved for a mortgage through a lender is so important. This shows you what you can even look at that way you don’t get your heart set on a four-tier cake when in reality you can only even afford a one-tier.

Next is to make that list of wants v. needs. The needs being things like distances, good school systems, number of bedrooms while wants are things like that farmhouse sink, a man cave, a shed, things that can be added later.

The important thing about finding a dea home is that it has all the things you can’t change already there. You can’t do much about a sunken cake after it is already baked unless you want to buy another just like how it would be more expensive to add another bedroom or harder to change jobs once you’ve decided on a specific house.

Things like fixtures and paint color, while possibly changing your initial opinion, can be changed and don’t affect the value of the house outside of what you are dreaming of.
